Wehave had many good years from the iron pipe fence around the older section of the cemetery. Very many years! The fence was not there in 1872, but the photo at the right was taken June 10, 1887 and shows the fence on the left. It is a little straighter than today, but looks pretty much the same from a distance. Unfortunately, we have repaired much of it over the years and continue to make repairs to the repairs. It is bent and broken in places after over 129 years. We have done many repairs and have had some success with repairs this July. See the before and after pictures below. However, we will have to plan for replacement as the patches will not last for long.
Our long term project is to add fence to locations that do not have it and replace the old fence with granite posts which will have chain between the posts or do some other long lasting solution. This will look well to preserve the character and dignity of the cemetery and should last even longer than the pipe fence we have preserved for so long.
Please let us know if you would like to participate in this project with a donation for a portion of the new fence.
